I'd like to use sandpaper to rough steel plates (tricky work using the file, and I haven't got a lathe...): which kind do you think is better to use? A fine or a coarse one?

If using Sandpaper, use very coarse one, minimum grit80, up to 40. ("very coarse" for a toolmaker, but quite normal for a carpenter ;) )

    Hallo Hans,
No problem about it :) Thanks anyway for suggestions.
I've used a fine sandpaper to treat the plates, probably that's why they tend to stick again.
(I forgot to write: I had to tight the big central nut before refitting, as it was a very little bit loose :()

  • Here I am again :)
Just come back from a journey on the hills here around to test the clutch. Found that plates got stuck again (the bike has slept for a time...), freed them, and then started!
Starting from stationary is all right, shifting down is OK, but if I shift up under certain RPMs (something like 3000/min) gear change becomes jerky and imprecise. If I change up over those RPMs, it gives no problems. Is that normal?

  • NO
I suggest, that your prob. isn`t the clutch - seems to be the gear.

  • Could you please post a close picture from your front and rear sprockets? It sounds a bit like a chain jumping over worn teeth...

edit: I misunderstood. If gearchange is unprecise at low RPM than it can be quite normal. I wouldn't bother.

  • Thanks for answering!
Tried the bike again today, now "strange" gearchange seems to occour... when the bike wants. ?(
